چکیده

Traditional Chinese acupuncture has a history of over 2,500 years. It is now considered to be a type of “complementary medicine” because it is effective in the treatment of many conditions with fewer side effects compared with other medical procedures, such as surgery or treatment with pharmaceuticals (Wu, 1996). The WHO has published guidance describing the efficacy of acupuncture in the cure or relief of 64 different symptoms (2003). For example, acupuncture has been successfully applied in cases of chronic pain, nausea, arthritis, and digestive problems, among others. Two different strategies have been commonly used when performing acupuncture therapy, i.e., manual acupuncture (MA) and electroacupuncture (EA). EA is a modified form of traditional MA. The advantage of EA is in its combined therapeutic effects of transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation (TENS) and MA.

Electroacupuncture reduces chronic fibromyalgia pain through attenuation of transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 signaling pathway in mouse brains

Objective(s): Fibromyalgia pain is a mysterious clinical pain syndrome, characterized by inflammation in the brain, whose molecular mechanisms are still unknown. Females are more commonly affected by fibromyalgia, exhibiting symptoms such as widespread mechanical pain, immune dysfunction, sleep disturbances, and poor quality of life. Electroacupuncture (EA) has been us...

Acupuncture analgesia: areas of consensus and controversy.

The clinical practice of acupuncture is growing in popularity world-wide. In parallel, interest in the scientific basis of acupuncture has been increasing, as reflected by a dramatic rise in the number of scientific publications on acupuncture and related techniques (ART) in the recent decade [16]. After 40 years of extensive studies, compelling evidence has been obtained to support acupuncture...

Seeing the body: a new mechanism for acupuncture analgesia?

The use of visual illusions to study how the brain gives rise to a representation of the body has produced surprising results, particularly in relation to modulation of pain. It seems likely that this research has relevance to how we understand acupuncture analgesia. Acupuncture supplies several different kinds of signal to the brain: touch in the preliminary examination for tender areas; needl...

Electroacupuncture attenuates chronic fibromyalgia pain through the phosphorylated phosphoinositide 3-kinase signaling pathway in the mouse brain

Objective(s): Fibromyalgia (FM) is a central nervous system disorder characterized by widespread mechanical hyperalgesia due to unknown mechanisms. Several inflammatory mediators, such as interleukin-1 (IL-1), IL-6, IL-8, and tumor necrosis factor, are increased in the serum of FM patients. Although medications including pregabalin, duloxetine, and milnacipran are used...

Unanticipated Insights into Biomedicine from the Study of Acupuncture.

Research into acupuncture has had ripple effects beyond the field of acupuncture. This paper identifies five exemplars to illustrate that there is tangible evidence of the way insights gleaned from acupuncture research have informed biomedical research, practice, or policy. The first exemplar documents how early research into acupuncture analgesia has expanded into neuroimaging research, broade...
